We live in a world of spin, and unfortunately many commentators treat spin as news: shame.

A case in point is the announcement by the newly merged display group, founded from the ashes of Toshiba, Sony and Hitachi’s development labs. The announcement of a video capable colour ePaper display claims that it is the first to be able to display HD quality video at high frame rates. Which then, in the hands of commentators turns into, ‘the first video capable ePaper display.’ Which is just untrue (see: Philips Electronics 2003 electrowetting displays).

Let’s dissect the claim:

1. First? Not so. That was Philips electrowetting display. In 2003. But, as I pointed out in my 2004 paper the display operated on a CMY (no ‘K’ - black) colour model which made it look anaemic.

2. Video capable? Still the Philips display, as shown at CBiT in Hanover in 2003.

3. High frame rate? Well that depends on what you mean by ‘high’. No frame rate is given. But the electrowetting display showed video.

So we are left with the HD claim. This seems to be the trick, this is true. But that said HD is somewhat ‘so what’. Current high-end tablet displays are way above HD, and cheap tablets and cell phones do HD with no effort.

So is this display ‘news’? Well yes. But only because it marks an output from this new combine, which represents strong industrial potential in the market.

The colour is still disappointing. The company website claims a RGBW (‘W’ for white, for a transmissive area boosting backlight and thus brilliance). Which should display a full 24bit colour gamut. The colours shown are dull, and demonstrate a low-chroma.

So we are left with an incremental development, backed by a huge industrial marketing operation. If only the commentators took some time and effort to understand first and write second.

This is quite remarkable. Officials effectively acting as thieves, and the triumph of justice reported in this article is:
* Less than 1/3 of the funds stolen by state officials returned.
* The state thieves are required not to threaten victims with dogs.
* The thieves can only use stolen funds to buy radio equipment.
If this was happening at a checkpoint in a failed African state it would be a scandal. Seeing it happening, unpunished, in the U.S is just bewildering

It has been a quite remarkably busy summer; representing the Drawing Research Network at the Tallinn Drawing Triennial, running the DRN’s own conference at Loughborough University and lastly advising (in a small way) at the Thinking Through Drawing seminar at Wimbledon College of Art;* and the work goes on.

Within a week of finishing the previous round of work we’re into planing for the next stage of research projects.

It never stops.
